The fixture is designed based on the principle of the reflective three-shade system. It directs the majority of the light downwards and distributes a glare-free light. The shades are made of Italian mouth-blown glass. The amber tone and glossy surface on the outside of the shades in combination with the sandblasted matt underside, gives a soft and diffuse light distribution. The stem and base are brushed brass, untreated and it will become darker unless polished.
Born in Copenhagen, Poul Henningsen was an influential character not just as a designer, but as a critic, writer and politician. His ideas were focused on functionality and it was in one of the cold and dark nights of winter that he came up with his signature PH lamp for Louis Poulsen. His designs are characterised by their detailed functionality embedded in culture and societal needs, lending them a timeless aspect.
