About the designers:
Grafunkt is a Singapore furniture shop that is fashion- and lifestyle-forward, rooted in the ethos of good design as fundamental to good living. Our careful curation of furniture, lighting and accessories, from all over the world, accentuates our commitment to delivering the best. We also believe in the strength of collaboration, and are committed to working with the local creative scene to boost and support the Singaporean arts narrative.
Onlewo is a Singapore design
studio that creates original fabric designs. They draw inspiration from its
Singapore roots to create pattern designs with stories. Through their
contemporary rendition of heritage, places and culture in Singapore and Asia,
expressed on home, fashion and lifestyle goods, they hope to connect people and
memories, enliven conversations and ignite new passions.
About the design:
A playful deconstruction of the original Quaderna
desk, the Grafunkt x Onlewo collaboration introduces a unique tile design
inspired by the Asian vernacular, manifested on a stool and ottoman.
A playful deconstruction of the original Quaderna desk, the Grafunkt x Onlewo collaboration introduces a unique tile design inspired by the Asian vernacular, manifested on a stool and ottoman.“I’ve seen many works from Onlewo that is inspired by the Peranakan tiles that can be found in the old Singapore architecture landscape and every tile tells a Singapore story be it flora, fauna or patterns inspired by Islamic mathematic. This prompted me to investigate the works of Superstudio, an Italian architecture firm in the 60s that designed the Zanotta Quaderna desk, a tile-like grid patterned on the archetype of a table. Not exactly a homage to the original design but I think it is my way of looking at modernism with a bit of Asian context, to lend a bit of soul and familiarity instead of a utopian look for this collaboration to celebrate our 55th National Day.”
“The tile design is a celebration of the multi-cultural heritage of Singapore and the creative architectural designs our forefathers gifted us. Singapore today is the result of generations of cultural interplay which is reflected in our physical environment in the form of colour, form and texture. This design, named Singa Flore, made up of small flowers and leaves, is my interpretation of the diversity and vibrancy Singapore enjoys even though it is a small country.”
Collaboration has always been at the core of Grafunkt’s values. Having experienced and benefitted from them, we are committed to contributing to and supporting our local creative scene by increasing our collaborative efforts. These collaborations are always aligned with our dedication to share meaningful designs that improve lives through the stories objects can tell.
